How to get the most out of a Freeze Frame search
With around 20,000 images and related resources including biographies, expedition outlines, and resources on the Polar Regions you may wish to refine your search terms to limit the results.
Simple Text Search:
A free text option; simply type in your search term for a quick search.
You can limit your search to either images or articles. Or you may wish to search within both of these options, in this case they are already both selected as a default.
Once you have typed in your search term and chosen whether you wish to search in images, articles, or both, select the search button or press enter on your keypad.
The results will be shown in no particular order. Images will appear in thumbnail form with the reference number, date, and title displayed. Articles will appear in thumnail form with only the title of the article displayed. You may scroll through the results by selecting ‘next page’ or ‘previous page’, or you may wish to view them as a slideshow. Click on an image or article to select it and you will be taken to it’s main page.
The slideshow option will bring up a larger image and will automatically scroll through the results. The basic information about each image will be displayed at the top of the page, as well as a link to the full information. If you wish to stop the slideshow, simply click on ‘exit slideshow’ and you will be taken to the last results page viewed.
Advanced Search:
The advanced search can be used to narrow down the results if you are searching for something specific. You have the options of choosing to search by the reference number, location, summary, title, and keyword. If you are searching for a particular photographer, collection, or physical media of photograph (e.g. glass lantern slide), there are drop down menus for each of these which list all of the available options. In order to see all images from a particular expedition, or photographer simply choose the one you are interested in from the drop down menu and select search.
Keyword Search:
We have tagged each image on Freeze Frame with a set of keywords which best describe it. These keywords are displayed in the tag cloud in alphabetical order, next to the keyword the number of images linked to it is shown in brackets. Simply select the keyword you are interested in to take you to these images.
The Gallery:
If you are not sure which images you wish to view, take a look at the gallery where a selection of images from across the collection have been grouped together under thematic headings.
You have the option of creating your own gallery by saving your favourite images. Details of how to do this can be found on the create your own gallery page, from here you can also see the favourite images chosen by Sir Ranulph Fiennes and others, including the Freeze Frame project team.
